Billed as a “box set” – this
31-song single disc and accompanying DVD packaged in a 108-page book written by
Mark, Shawn and Jamie Stern chronicles the history of Youth Brigade and BYO (Better Youth Organization) Records.
A must-have for hardcore fans of the band, label and genre, Let Them Know: The Story of Youth Brigade
And BYO Records celebrates the label’s 25th anniversary.
The CD features a who’s who
of American punk rock, including Bad Religion, Pennywise, Dropkick Murphys,
NOFX, Anti-Flag and the Bouncing Souls covering BYO artists. The documentary DVD
Them Know examines the influence of the label via
interviews with the likes of Ian MacKaye (Fugazi, Minor Threat, founder of
Dischord Records), Fat Mike (NOFX, Me First & The Gimme Gimmes, founder of
Fat Wreck Chords) and BYO artist 7 Seconds, among others.
The DVD proves informative,
although I don’t know if multiple viewings will ever be necessary, and the book
is cool; loaded with pictures and interesting tales and factoids. Although this
could have been packaged in a standard jewel case the presentation is
impressive and a nice touch. As for the music, what it’s really all about….the
disc rocks. It would have been nice to maybe hear some of the actual bands do
their own songs (maybe that could have been an extra disc in the set) but it is
cool hearing Youth Brigade take on SNFU’s “Misfortune,” and these 31 songs pack
a mean punch that do not disappoint.
Make sure to check out Blurt’s
recent interview with Youth Brigade founder Shawn Stern. Good stuff.
