Umphrey’s McGee played nearly four and a half hours at the fifth annual UM Bowl at New York’s Capitol Theatre. It’s a show based on a football game theme where each quarter is a one hour musical set. The band only sells about one-half the venue to make it really relaxed and with a small show feel. I have seen Umphrey’s now a few times and they always have something special up their sleeves; here, they closed the second half with Pink Floyd’s “Brain Damage” and “Eclipse,” which the band had not played since 2006. Umphrey’s was spot on the whole night! With Bill Evans sitting in on sax and the multi-talented band members changing instruments, this was definitely a memorable and unique show. (Incidentally, Umphrey’s McGee has a new album coming out June 10 called Similar Skin.
