Recorded by Arcade Fire collaborator Howard Bilerman at Montreal club Backstreet, Clambakes
Vol. 4
comes as the 4th release in this series of live
shows that Superchunk is making available to its fans. (It’s a digital download
only available on the Merge site.) This show was on their tour for On the
Mouth,
when they were still on Matador, and it shows the band – Mac
especially – in a playful mood, joking with the crowd (“Hey, turn off the
dry ice machine. It doesn’t smell that good and you can’t see our fancy
haircuts.”).

The sound is thick and a bit muddy but the guitars are
cranked on overload and if I had a nickel for every cymbal crash heard on this
record, well, I’d have a lot of nickels. The band performs revved-up versions
of tunes like “Mower”, “On the Mouth”, “Package
Thief”, “Cast Iron” and one of the all time Superchunk classics,
“Cool.” The early ‘90s never sounded so good.

Standout Tracks: “Skip Steps 1 & 3,” “Cool”
