Pelican – Ataraxia/Taraxis

January 01, 1970

(Southern Lord)

After a prolific first decade of the ‘aughts, Chicago
instrumental quartet Pelican took some time off, returning three years on from
their last record with the EP Ataraxia/Taraxis.
While the band was hardly in a rut before, it nonetheless sounds revitalized
here, reveling in big melodies and even bigger riffs.

“Lathe Biosas” and “Parasite Colony” lay on both, filling
your cavities with viscous chocolate lava. The title tracks open and close the
record with a brooding but enticing mix of acoustic and electric guitars, moody
electric piano and understated percussion, avoiding the rawk bombast  that usually marks a good Pelican track (until
the end of “Taraxis,” at least) and bringing in new atmospheres. At only four
songs, Ataraxia/Taraxis may seem like
a mere taster, but it’s hard to believe 18 minutes of Pelicana would leave
anyone unsatisfied.
