Take a bit of
Emmylou Harris, add a dollop of Reba McEntire and you have the makings of the
sound of Leslie & The Badgers. Although alt/country and new/country have seemed
to leave classic country in the dust, Leslie & The Badgers are among the
groups bringing the sound back in a way that would do the Opry proud.

The group’s
new album Roomful of Smoke, (no –
nothing to do with the California
wild fires) is a joyful celebration resplendent with fiddles, steel guitar and
more classic country accompaniments. The highlight of the songs is Leslie’s
sparkling voice, which seems to float above the music as she sings the
heartfelt tunes. Her voice takes on a true country twang as she sings the title
track, a love song about “dreaming you to my door.”

If you want an
even greater dose of country, try “Americans in Rome,”
a knee slapping account of a country girl’s trip to Rome and something akin to her sightseeing
list.

If you long for
a return to the classic country that built Music Row, Leslie & The Badgers
is a fun trip back.

Standout Tracks: “Americans in Rome,” “Roomful of Smoke” NANCY DUNHAM
