Apparently jonesing for motorik decadence in former bands Fireside and the Caesars, psychedelic Swedes Frans Johansson and Joakim Åhlund formed Les Big Byrd, an electro-rock duo in love with Germanic cosmic rock on They Worshipped Cats.

Kicking off the LP with “Indus Waves,” the duo sets the standard early: repetitive, propulsive rhythms, simple melodies, acid-washed guitar and synth colors. “Tinitus Ætérnum,” “White Week” and “Vi Borde Prata, Men Det Är För Sent” follow suit, with the latter adding a soaring vocal melody. “Just One Time” floats a Daft Punk-like pop element in the mix, while “War in the Streets” folds in fetching 80s pop tunesmithery. But “1,2,3,4 Morte” returns to the yellow brick road already comfortably trod, upping the ante in texture and intensity. With aid from label owner/Brian Jonestown Massacre leader Anton Newcombe, Les Big Byrd pulls a shiny calling card out of a well-worn space suit.
