Desario – Zero Point Zero

Taking your band name from Daniel Desario, James Franco’s
brooding burnout with a heart of gold on TV’s Freaks and Geeks, is a pretty good start. But somehow, I can’t
picture Franco’s bad boy getting stoned to this. It’s just not rock enough.

The leadoff track, “Nautical Ways,” jangles on like a
poppier Smiths with a suitably pining lead vocal and a groove that may cause
flashback to the Go-Go’s hit “Our Lips Our Sealed” (specifically the bridge).
They’re at their best here when they let the drummer take it up a notch – on
“Cane Cola,” for instance, with its jagged power-chords and charging Motown
beat, or “Fine Time,” where the drums and guitar chug along in a Velvety fog
while the keyboard bring the mood like David Bowie “Heroes.” When the tempo
lags, they’re less effect (“Late Sedan”). But fortunately, most songs find them
playing to their strengths.

Standout Tracks: “Cane Cola,” “Fine Time” A. WATT
