Ex Green on Red lynchpin Dan Stuart produces new albums at best infrequently, which makes any new offering an event worth relishing. Happily and true to form, The Deliverance of Marlowe Billings proves the wait is well worth anticipating. Currently a resident of Mexico, Stuart hasn’t abandoned his edgier intents, and yet, in the guise and perspective of one Marlowe Billings, he offers what may well be his most accessible effort yet.

Shadowy ballads, amiable rockers and at least one enduring anthem in the stirring “What Are You Laughing About?” give the album an indelible imprint.  Co-produced by former Green On Red bandmate Jack Waterson, whose own output is sadly scarce of late, the set is well stocked with any number of other keepers as well — the good-natured, surprisingly Dylan-esque “Gap Toothed Girl,” the steadfast but pop perfect “Gonna Change,” the turbulent and tenuous “Clean White Sheet” and the slow and solemn “Love Will Kill You,” chief among them.

Clearly the interim between albums has been time well spent, because The Deliverance of Marlowe Billings provides a welcome return. Chances are, those that are fans of Stuart’s previous work, not to mention those encountering him for the first time, will find this album something akin to an essential acquisition.
