City & Colour – Little Hell

It’s hard to believe that City & Colour — the moniker
under which singer/guitarist Dallas Green operates on his own — is the product
of a guy who previously served as front man for a Canadian hardcore combo. Its
title aside, Little Hell, makes this
disparity seem all the more striking.

On songs such as “We Found Each Other in the
Dark,””Northern Wind” and “Sorrowing Man,” Green’s soulful vocals scale his upper
registers, bringing to mind Antony and the Johnsons, Aaron Neville or Boy
George when they wail with remorse. A series of acoustic laments with an
unerringly darker edge, this, the third City and Colour studio outing, finds
Green consistently convincing when it comes to purveying brooding ballads. The
heart- wrenching emotion is credible and convincing, even though the uneasy
undercurrents find Green’s brand of the blues seem somewhat tenuous at times.
Nevertheless, at this point in the trajectory, City & Colour manages to
provide a pleasing musical mélange.
