The concept here is basic enough: re-interpret a slew of old Honky Tonk tunes though a rock filter and the execution is surprisingly solid. Admirably there doesn’t seem to be much of a “aren’t we ironic” wink to these songs, but simply musicians tackling an oft ignored genre.

Chris Shiflett, formerly with longtime Northern Cali punks No Use For a Name, but better known as “the other guitarist” in Foo Fighters, is no stranger to country covers. As a founding  member of the best punk rock cover band out there, Me First & the Gimme Gimmes, Shiflett and his tattooed brethren have covered everyone form Hank Williams to The Dixie Chicks. And this current group, Chris Shiflett & The Dead Presidents, flirted with Americana on their debut a few years ago. So taking on Honky Tonk standards is not that big of a stretch for these guys.

Among the10 songs they tackle are gems from Buck Owens (“King of Fools”), Faron Young (“Live Fast Love Hard Die Young”) and a brave attempt at Waylon Jennings’ “Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way?”. The pedal steel and piano on these songs are flawless and while Shiflett’s vocals take some getting used to, they quickly gown on you after a few listens.
