Blue Water White Death – Blue Water White Death

January 01, 1970

This collaboration between Xiu Xiu’s Jamie Stewart and
Shearwater’s Jonathan Meiburg has the potential to go all sorts of wrong,
depending on your patience for wintry drone that runs the gamut from minor-key
to utterly atonal. #Blue Water White
# is a ghostly, icy affair, packed with ambient wheeze and echo-soaked
vocals.  But at a sensible 30 minutes it
doesn’t run itself into the ground, and the music’s interesting and
(importantly) eclectic enough to command attention.

“Nerd Future,” one of the record’s eeriest tracks, works
alternately as a shaky, claustrophobic jeremiad and a clattering collection of
found noise; “The End of Sex” may or may not use children’s voices-the
production is aggressively murky-to lend its light, breathy performance a genuinely
creepy undertone. An uneasy listen, the whole thing sounds like it was
recorded, or spliced together, in the flooded basement of a stone house in the
middle of the woods. Not everyone’s glass of absinthe, but if you’re a Nico or
Beach House fan, welcome home.

For The Greater Jihad,” “Nerd Future” ERIC WAGGONER
