I was lucky enough to catch an Antiseen gig at Maxwell’s in Hoboken, NJ in ’89 or so and though they had already been around for 5 or 6 years at that point they were still relative unknowns outside of their Charlotte, NC home base. Well, here it is nearly 25 years after that gig I saw (and 30 years since the band’s inception) and they are still snortin’ and snarlin’ on stages across the USA and beyond.
This live set, from the Tremont Music hall in Charlotte, took place on 2/2313 and features the classic (Eat More Possum/1992) lineup of the band, mainstays Jeff Clayton on vocals and Joe Young on guitar while the rhythm section is Tom O’Keefe on bass and Jeff’s brother Greg on the skins.
Anyone who thinks this band has mellowed with age would be sadly mistaken. Hell, they sound angrier than they did before (this is, after all, a band that recorded with G.G. Allin). After an intro they rip right into “You’re Gonna Tote An Ass Kickin’”, then a scorching “Today Your Love”, a pummeling version of “Storm Trooper” and plenty more. You get a totally gruff cover of the Talking Heads “Psycho Killer” and other faves like “Chicken” and “My God Can Beat Up Your God.” Encores? We’ve got those, too: “Wifebeater” and “Fuck All Y’all.”
Nice to see the band is just like I remember them,. It’s not prettied dup or watered down, it’s Antiseen.
