Yesterday at the White House, Kendrick Lamar and Janelle Monáe turned up to serenade President Obama and assembled guests. Then Obama joined the two hip-hop/soul stars at the mic to sing “Happy Birthday” to his daughter, Malia, who had just turned 18. Watch the clip below, particularly when Obama gives Kudos to the singers: “I have to tell you, these two, I’ve gotten a chance to know, and they are both amazing artists and talented and popular and doing great things. But they are also very conscious about their responsibilities and obligations. And they put in a lot of time and effort on behalf of a lot of causes that are important. We’re really proud of them for that.”
The second clip is the full 15-minute performance by Lamar and Monae, considerably lesser quality, but still pretty cool. There’s one little song called “Let’s Go Crazy” that you might recognize….
