Video: Alt-rocker Billy Corgan Gets Award from non-Alt-rock mag Alternative Press

No truth to the rumor that the Smashing Pumpkins will reciprocate by having next album featuring guests Fall Out Boy…

I used to read Alternative Press… then I found an alternative, ‘cos I needed my Siouxsie and Bauhaus fix and it just wasn’t happenin’ with that magazine. Still, when I heard that Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan was getting some type of award for his work in the “alternative music” field, my interest was pricked (so to speak). Indeed, the other night at the Alternative Press Music Awards the gave Corgan the Vanguard Award, which is not related in any way to Vanguard Records (who don’t even advertise in Alternative Press) but rather has something to do with Corgan being “in the vanguard” of music. I know how to parse my lingo, yo. Presumably the type of music that A.P. covers – or used to cover, you know, when they covered “alternative music.”

Confused? Me too! At any rate, watch a video of Corgan receiving the award from pro wrestler CM Punk in which he states, “Over 25 years ago, I made the decision that I was going to push your buttons, or the people that came before you, or the people that came before you. I like to think that I’m receiving this in humility because I’m willing to push your buttons, because I’m willing to tell you to go fuck yourself. I didn’t start a band to be anybody’s bitch, I started a band to kick your fucking head in.”

I have no idea what he’s going on about. I assume he’s not referring to A.P. with the “you” stuff, however…

But no Bauhaus or Siouxsie members getting awards last night? Shame!
