Peyton

Ace tune culled from the group’s forthcoming record.

It’s a big damn day when we have some Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band news – they’ve got a new album, So Delicious, out next week (Feb. 17, on Shanachie/Yazoo). It’s the fifth longplayer from the group, which includes the Rev plus Breezy Peyton on washboard/vocals and Ben Bussell on drums/vocals. They make a big damn sound for a three-piece. And we have a big damn track premiere we wanna share with you. It’s for “Hell Naw”:

See how that fulfills “several music food groups” (to quote a great pop philosopher) all at once, courtesy this young band of pre-war-blues-loving hipsters from Southern Indiana (Nashville, Indiana to be exact). The group has always been strong on authenticity, blending blues, ragtime, folk, country and other traditional styles with the sleek modern energy of do-it-yourself, homespun, punk-fueled rock. The tunes are plucked from the Big Damn Band’s lives, their community or from the canonical songbook that fed the Rev. Peyton’s formative creative identity. It’s a mix that’s allowed the band to win fans from all corners of the Americana and rock worlds, and bring a new generation to blues and other roots music.

The Reverend himself comments on the tune premiered here, explaining that it “was inspired by losing my phone to the sea while on tour.  Suddenly I am completely disconnected from the outside world, band business, home, everything.  Having to spend all the coin replacing it wasn’t making me feel very good about it either, but sitting out on a balcony with a giant moon and stars staring back at me, I started thinking about the phone, times we have had on the road, and how silly our lives have become being so glued to these “I-things.”  I was making myself smile thinking about it all, but mostly I felt lucky to be there with the ocean and that beautiful sky.”

Adds Breezy, “I think Hell Naw has my favorite lyrics on the entire record.  There are some great lines.”
