“Searching For Sugar Man” Director Committed Suicide, Brother Says

By Fred Mills

We were all saddened by the news earlier this week that Sweden’s Malik Bendjelloul, the Oscar-winning director of the 2012 Searching for Sugar Man documentary, had died Tuesday. His brother Johar later confirmed to CNN that the cause of death was suicide,

“My brother had been struggling with depression for a short period of time, and depression is something you can die from,” he told CNN. “This is such an enormous loss that I have no words for it. We ask that everyone kindly respect our family’s privacy during this devastating time.”

We will post a tribute early next week to the director and to Rodriguez – Rodriguez gave Blurt an exclusive interview in 2009 and we’ll be republishing portions of it.
