“Global upheaval, extreme right wing politics and some fundamental human rights at risk”: is Bono talking about 1987 or 2017?

By Blurt Staff

In January, Ireland’s venerable Hot Press magazine published a special report on U2’s The Joshua Tree Tour 2017, which is to begin in mid-May in Vancouver, hit most of the major markets in the US, then head to the UK and Europe, ultimately wrapping the first week of August. It sold out nearly instantly – see the tour itinerary, below. BLURT’s very own Stephen Judge will be on hand for the July 22 concert in Dublin at Croke Park, so stay tuned for a full report from him this summer. Meanwhile, tune in to our Facebook page tomorrow, March 9, as Stephen will be hosting a Facebook live event in honor of the iconic album’s 30th anniversary in which he guides us around Dublin on a U2-themed walking tour.

According to Hot Press, “Each show on the tour will include a performance of The Joshua Tree in its entirety, with support in Dublin and the rest of Europe from special guest Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds—with Noel saying, ‘It will be both a pleasure and an honour to play my part in what still remains the greatest show on earth.’ Support duties in the States will be shared by OneRepublic, Mumford & Sons and The Lumineers.”

Bono was quoted in the story:

“It seems like we have come full circle from when The Joshua Tree songs were originally written, with global upheaval, extreme right wing politics and some fundamental human rights at risk. To celebrate the album – as the songs seem so relevant and prescient of these times too – we decided to do these shows, it feels right for now. We’re looking forward to it.

“Recently I listened back to The Joshua Tree for the first time in nearly 30 years,” the singer added. “It’s quite an opera. A lot of emotions which feel strangely current, love, loss, broken dreams, seeking oblivion, polarisation… all the greats… I’ve sung some of these songs a lot… but never all of them. I’m up for it, if our audience is as excited as we are… it’s gonna be a great night. Especially when we play at home. Croke Park… it’s where the album was born, 30 years ago.”
