The Nightingales, a Birmingham-based post-punk outfit so beloved of John Peel that they once outranked the Fall in lifetime appearances, is making a rare stateside visit this fall, hitting six West Coast cities in September, beginning last night in San Francisco. They’re touring on the brilliantly venomous Mind Over Matter, out since the spring, which skewers big ticket musical exports (ahem Mumford) and the journalists that cover them.
The live show, caught half a dozen years ago, was a rampaging monster, frontman Robert Lloyd clutching a bottle of rapidly disappearing brown liquor, swaying visibly in the onslaught of sound, but muttering dark, sardonic home truths into a blistering well of rhythmic mayhem.
