“When you’re strange…” indeed.

Seems like just a couple of days ago we were basking in the computer screen glow of some very shaky Instragram video clips from the Nov. 10 Patti Smith show at NYC’s Beacon Theater that featured surprise opening act Michael Stipe. No doubt more clips have surfaced, but what really should get folks excited is this”
The free download comes courtesy of the Big O zine and includes downloadable artwork. It’s not a perfect audience recording by any stretch of the imagination; most likely it was recorded from the balcony. But it’s still pretty good, and anyway, it’s an unusual enough show to warrant at least a listen, especially Stipe’s set which featured Neil Young, Velvets, Mott the Hoople, Doors, John Lennon and Dave Berry covers; his band featured Jesse Smith and Andy LeMaster. Meanwhile, the PSG does the entirety of Horses and featured Stipe guesting along with Patti’s kids Jesse and Jackson. It’s also got one of the best versions of “Dancing Barefoot” I’ve ever heard, and the 10-minute closing song, the Who’s “My Generation,” is a total raveup that even features Patti on feedback guitar. Below is the full tracklisting.
