Kinks’ “Muswell Hillbillies” Gets 2CD Deluxe Reissue

2nd (or 4th…) time to the well for the kountry-tinged klassic…

Record labels bank on us buying the same old crap over and over, right? As long as there’s a bonus track, or some live material, or an unreleased live show, etc., we queue right up to purchase an album multiple times during our lifetimes. Just ask Elvis Costello or David Bowie, who seem to reissue their back catalog every 10 years, each time they strike a fresh deal with another label. And The Kinks are no stranger to that syndrome, either, with their Reprise/Pye, RCA and Arista eras getting several re-rollouts since the CD was introduced.

But here’s one reish we can get behind: a vastly expanded two-disc version of their 1971 stone classic Muswell Hillbillies, one of those “perfect” albums that could never be improved upon but is also so great that to hear additional material from the same sessions or from the same time period proves nigh-on irresistible to fans. It’s due out Oct. 7 (or possibly the 15th, if you check Amazon) on the Sanctuary label via Universal, and as Uncut is reporting, it “features five previously unreleased tracks, including “Lavender Lane” and early demo “Nobody’s Fool”, as well as alternative song versions and BBC sessions. All have been re-mastered from original tapes.”

Two of the tracks – “Mountain Woman” and “Kentucky Moon” – previously appeared as bonus tracks on the 1998 remastered reissue, by the way.

Uncut adds that Ray Davies has authored a new book due out in the fall: Americana: The Kinks, The Road And The Perfect Riff.
