Challenging, and charming.
The new Hauschka album Abandoned City is out March 18 on Temporary Residence – it’s Volker Bertelmann’s first album since 2012’s Silfra with Hilary Hahn, and 2011’s Salon Des Amateurs on Fat Cat. The video for first single “Elizabeth Bay” was unveiled this week:
The album features the pianist showcasing the intricate prepared piano work he’s come to be known for – but as the label puts it, “has a distinct energy/precision production and tautness that reminds of the early, precision output from Battles crossed with something like a Nils Frahm… concept wise, each song is about a different abandoned city (Craco, Bakersville, Pripyat, etc). Hauschka will actually be touring the US for about a week and a half in April. Major markets only, but this is a special one, so make an attempt to travel if you get the chance.
