2013 International Bluegrass Music Awards Winners Announced


Gibson Brothers dominate the annual event.

This week in Raleigh, NC (right here in BLURT’s back yard, no less) the International Bluegrass Music Association has been partying like it’s nobody’s business re: all things bluegrass. It’s the first year the annual convention has been held in North Carolina – previously, Nashville was the location, but some observers felt that city’s country obsession relegated bluegrass to red headed stepchild status – and as a result Raleigh has rolled out the red carpet with no less than 5 days and nights of showcases and performances all over the downtown area (and even in the corridors of hotels).

Last night they held the awards ceremony, natch, and here are the winners:


Entertainer of the Year: The Gibson Brothers

Vocal Group: The Gibson Brothers

Instrumental Group: The Boxcars

Song of the Year: “They Called It Music,” The Gibson Brothers, written by Eric Gibson and Joe Newberry

Album of the Year: “Papertown,” Balsam Range (from Lake Junaluska)

Gospel Recorded Performance: “Beulah Land,” Marty Raybon

Instrumental Recorded Performance: “Foggy Mountain Rock,” Tom Adams, Dan Tyminski, Ron Stewart, Dennis Crouch, Clay Hess and Randy Kohrs

Recorded Event of the Year: “What’ll I Do,” Terry Baucom with Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Wyatt Rice, Steve Bryant and Buddy Melton

Emerging Artist: Della Mae

Male Vocalist: Junior Sisk

Female Vocalist: Claire Lynch

Banjo Performer: Mike Munford

Bass Performer: Barry Bales

Fiddle Performer: Jason Carter

Dobro Performer: Rob Ickes
