Michael Stipe not onstage despite being on hand, however.

Slicing Up Eyeballs is reporting that Thursday night during a Peter Buck gig at Athens’ 40 Watt Club, erstwhile bandmates Mike Mills and Bill Berry joined him for a version of R.E.M.’s “(Don’t Go Back To) Rockville.” Writes the blog, “with Michael Stipe reportedly in the crowd” the three performed [although] “the near-reunion wasn’t exactly a surprise; Buck was slated to perform with Kevn Kinney of Drivin’ N Cryin’… and all four members had been spotted in Athens the night before.” (Those links take you to Twitter feeds commenting on the event.)
Here’s an occasionally wobbly but otherwise decen video of the song. And yes, that would be Scott McCaughey and Bill Rieflin onstage as well. Hey, what’s up with those little McCartney-esque head shakes bassist Mike Mills is doing?
