Resident Advisor reports (via Pitchfork) that producer/DJ Pete Namlook (born Peter Kuhlmann)
passed away on Nov. 8 from unspecified causes at the age of 51. The electronic

In the process of putting the finishing touches on their new
album set for release in 2013 on the Communicating Vessels label is The Great
Book of John, Alabama
natives who’ve been compared to the likes of Jeff Buckley and Stevie Ray
Vaughan. They previously caught the attention of the public with a striking
cover of “Never Tear Us Apart” in 2011, following that up earlier this year
with “Simple Things,” a powerful video that was rich in metaphors and developed
an in depth storyline about the
evils of temptation and greed.
Now they’ve unveiled the video for the upcoming record’s
first single, “Dark Star” (released Nov. 27), cut live in a studio in NYC while
the band was on tour. The track was recorded and produced by PLX / WIZ, while the
video directed by Seth Newell. Check it out:
The Great Book of John chart bluesy Southern rock ballads laced with dreamy
boy-girl harmonies that are intertwined with monster guitar solos, while
frontman Taylor Shaw (late of Wild Sweet Orange) brings forth psychedelic
elements of old-soul-esque vocal qualities. For the new video they decided to
showcase possibly their greatest strength, their performance.
It’s called Fade and it will be in stores Jan. 15 in regular, deluxe and vinyl editions – that would be the new Yo La Tengo album, cut in Chicago with John McEntire. Below watch the first video, for the track “Before We Run.” It was directed by Georgia Hubley’s sis Emily.

The New York Post is reporting that filmmaker Brett Morgen, of Rolling Stones Crossfire Hurricane documentary fame (it airs tonight on HBO), is putting into motion his next project, a film about Kurt Cobain and Nirvana. Courtney Love is involved, having first started talking to Morgen in 2007, and plans are to release it in 2014.
Morgan is quoted as saying, “Courtney is the one that brought me into this. We’ve been trying to find the right time to put
this film together and the time is now . . . Kurt was not only an
amazing songwriter and musician, he was an incredible artist and
filmmaker. So we are going to do the movie sort of like a third-person
autobiography – [as] if Kurt was around and making a film about his
Ah. Did not know that Cobain was a filmmaker of note. Anyhow, while you wait for the film, read the BLURT interview with author Gillian G. Gaar, who recently published a biography of Nirvana’s pre-fame years that contains its share of previously unknown revelations. And hey, didja ever hear the story about the pre-Nirvana Kurt Cobain demos that turned up in 2010…?

Today was the 90th anniversary of the debut of
the BBC Radio – which you’d be forgiven for not noticing unless you actually
lived in Britain, although here at BLURT central we did enjoy listening to a
couple of tributes broadcast this afternoon on the local NPR/PRI affiliate – and
to mark it each BBC station on the planet aired an unusual sonic collage, 2LO Calling, which Blur/Gorillaz
frontman Damon Albarn put together. The ever-restless musical aesthete put out
a call for people to submit their ideas of what would be most representative of
the BBC for someone encountering it 90 years hence – and he subsequently
assembled a three-minute piece.
