The entertainment industry has come out of the woodwork to
support Barack Obama’s reelection efforts as the Democrats host the National
Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Daily Show is taping
live, as well as Chris Matthews.
Pundits, and politicians are on every corner and musicians are popping
up everywhere: Warren Haynes, Branford Marsalis, and members of Aerosmith
played a “Rockin’ Blues” Private Party for Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel last
night. North Carolina’s
Squirrel Nut Zippers were just playing somewhere (a lot of this stuff is
clandestine and locations aren’t advertised) and tonight, The B-52’s play among
others.

Now, don’t think all these guys are showing up for
free.  The Democratic Party and private
promoters bring the bands in.  A source
at Live Nation revealed last night, “We sold half the Foo tickets and the
Democratic Party bought the other half.” One of the owners rented the BUTTER
Night Club at NC Music Factory for a Jeff Bridges jam with Governor O’Malley of
Maryland on Monday
night – of the experience and payola the owner said, “I have no complaints.”

But nobody has brought the intensity to Charlotte quite like
the FOO FIGHTERS, who played at Fillmore – Charlotte on Wednesday night, September 5th,
for MTV Networks “Rock the Vote” – playing a mesmerizing set that
spanned almost three hours.  In my
opinion, Dave Grohl is, undoubtedly, is the last true rock hero, playing all
the crowd favorites: “Learn to Fly” “These Days”, “monkey Wrench”, and Times
Like These” plus Tom Petty’s “Breakdown”, Mose Allison’s “Young Man Blues”,
“Jet” by Paul McCartney, and Pink Floyd’s “In the Flesh” – a total of
thirty-five songs over the course of the evening.  And at a $50.00 ticket, the crowd got their
money’s worth – quality musicianship, fantastic stage presence and exuberant
performance, in my opinion, has been a staple of the Foo Fighters – the last
best hope of the rock genre.  Grohl will
be directing and producing a film about the legendary Sound City Recording
Studio in Van Nuys, California.
This from the press release:

“Confirming widely circulated rumors, Dave Grohl of Foo
Fighters and Nirvana announced he will direct and produce a feature Documentary
film, SOUND CITY
about the infamous recording studio in Van
Nuys, California. The
film was conceived by Grohl after purchasing the legendary Neve 8028 recording
console from Sound City Studios last year. The console, built in 1972, is
considered by many to be the crown jewel of analog recording equipment, having
recorded such artists as Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Cheap Trick,
Guns and Roses, Fear, Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Slipknot, Nine Inch
Nails, Metallica, and countless other musical legends over the past 40 years.”

The Foo Fighters will perform tonight at the Democratic
National Convention at Time Warner Cable Arena.
