Those of us in the music writing business are accustomed to
the sad but necessary task of reporting on music-world deaths; as the
population ages, each year seems to bring more and more passings of icons and
heroes. Sometimes going overlooked, however, are the deaths of folks behind the
scenes, including those we consider “one of our own.” So it was doubly gratifying
to see the generous outpouring of emotion today as we got the news of losing
Nashville-based journalist Chris Neal – though doubly tragic to learn that he
was only 40 years old. Neal reportedly died in his sleep Sunday night, at his
home; no official cause of death has been announced yet.

The Nashville Scene alternative newsweekly reports: “Chris was a longtime contributor to the Scene and many other publications, and in a decade-long stint
at Country Weekly established himself as a thoughtful, engaging music
critic. More recently, he’d concentrated on his work as an editor at M: Music and Musicians.”

There is to be a visitation Thursday from 4-8 pm then a
memorial service Friday morning at 10 am at the Hibbett & Hailey Funeral
Home in Nashville.
