“End of the World” is the captivating opener off JKutchma & the Five Fifths’
upcoming debut, Pastoral, set for
release on Last Chance Records July 3. Kutchma — who goes by Jason, hails from
Durham, N.C.,
and also fronts the barroom punk act Red Collar — may be setting a table for
“the four horsemen” here over pedal steel cries and a run-down shuffle beat,
but the message on this song and throughout Pastoral is redemptive.

End Of The World by JKutchma

Kutchma’s emergence as an Americana aficionado rounds out quite a
transition. Shortly after the release of their 2009 full-length debut, Pilgrim, Red Collar was beset by
circumstances – marriages, births, a broken drummer arm — that threatened to
derail the band just as it was picking up critical steam. Instead, Kutchma was
touring America alone and morphing from a Red Collar solo act to new material
built on a folk aesthetic trailing back through Springsteen and Dylan to Cash
and Guthrie. Some of it was available in a five-song live EP he’d been selling
for the price of a gallon of gas.

Kutchma returned home and fleshed out his new
songs with a backing band built from various Triangle acts, recording Pastoral at Echo
Mountain studios in Asheville. Pedal steel and organ accompanied
these country shuffles and twangy rockers, casting an open road feel to
Kutchma’s music and announcing a major new songwriting talent. Order the
nine-song LP early and you can receive Kutchma’s accompanying book, full of
road-musings, handsome b&w photos, epigrams and various ephemera collected along
the journey.
