Breaking news: the
music world has lost another genuine legend.
By Fred Mills
It was only two days ago that Levon Helm’s family posted the
news that the drumming/songwriting great and Band mainstay was in the “final stages” of his
battle with cancer. The news just came in from the Times Herald-Record that Helm passed away today around 1:30 pm at Memorial Sloan-Kettering
in New York.
He was 71.
In a statement by Helm guitarist Larry Campbell: “We
lost Levon at 1:30 today surrounded by friends and family, and his musicians
have visited him. As sad as this was, it was very peaceful. What I’m most proud
of is he called me his partner. For me to arrive at a place like that with a
great man like him is the ultimate.”
