Apologies in advance for blowing our own horn, but… in at
least one man’s humble opinion, our four-day party at the Ginger Man in Austin
during SXSW. was a roaring success. We got stellar sets by everyone from the
Ettes, JC Brooks & the Uptown
Sound, David Garza, Greg Humphreys, Garland Jeffreys and Jon Langford &
Skull Orchard to Chuck Prophet, Amy Ray, Ken Stringfellow, Jon Auer, Jim White,
Milagres and The Wedding Present (and many more – view the full lineup here). It
was especially cool, too, to be on hand for some notable reunions: on Thursday,
legendary Austin power pop band Cotton Mather got back together to perform most
of their classic album Kontiki; then
on Friday we were treated to none other than The dB’s (along with Mitch Easter
on bass), playing old faves as well as prime cuts from their forthcoming new
album; and Peter Case and Paul Collins reunited and doing timeless tunes from
their old bands the Breakaways, the Nerves, the Plimsouls and The Beat. The
Case-Collins connection additionally yielded some great rock-geek moments in
the way of Peter Buck guesting on 12-string for a pair of songs and Chuck
Prophet coming up for a couple of numbers as well.

And then came Big Star, of Friday night: paying tribute to their fallen
comrades Alex Chilton and Andy Hummel (recall that exactly two years ago news
of Chilton’s death arrived just as SXSW was heating up) were Jon Auer, Ken
Stringfellow and Jody Stephens. Right around midnight on Friday those three
were thrilling a packed Ginger Man with a full set of Big Star material – along
with a raft of guest players, including the aforementioned Mr. Buck, Cotton
Mather’s Robert Harrison, John Doe, Latebirds frontman Markus Nordenstreng,
Blitzen Trapper’s Eric Early, some of the players from the previous night’s Big Star Third tribute concert, and
others. Definitely a pinch-me night, one which we’ll ave a very hard time
topping next year at our Austin
day party.
