With – drumroll,

Gemma Ray releases her new album
Island Fire May 29th on Bronze Rat, a melange
of lavish orchestral alt-pop, bitter-sweet girl-group-sounds, brooding
psychedelia and sci-fi waltzes (“Rescue Me”). The twang-pop gem “Runaway,” to
be released as a 10″ on 4/17 (Record Store Day), can be nabbed as a free MP3
To top the album off, Ray instigated an unprecedented collaboration with Ron
and Russell Mael, also known as Sparks.
In what can only be described as Sparks covering
Gemma Ray covering Sparks, the end result is, as
the label puts it, “Sparks re-interpretation of Gemma’s interpretation of Sparks…. The listener’s
mind is stirred by a very cinematic music that suggests an acquaintance with
the likes of composers John Barry and Ron Grainer, Tarantino’s soundtracks,
plus the Beach Boys, the Walker Brothers, the aforementioned Sparks and all sorts beyond.”
In recent months Gemma has been invited on tour with likes of Nick Cave’s
Grinderman, and Kitty, Daisy and Lewis, and you can catch her at New York’s Rockwood
Music Hall on Feb 29th
with a run of shows ending at an official SXSW showcase.
