Chickasaw Mudd Puppies Reunite, Perform

Legendary Athens combo ready to stomp once again… show this weekend
in their hometown, followed by one July 1 in Asheville.

Way back in early November we heard rumors that Athens’
roots stompers the Chickasaw Mudd Puppies, extant during the late ‘80s and
early ‘90s and claiming fans as diverse as Michael Stipe and Willie Dixon,
might be getting back together after a two-decade hiatus. Those predictions
have now turned out to be true, as one quick scan of the band’s Facebook page
or this video, directed by Jason Thrasher – will reveal.

Founding members Brant Slay (vocals, stomp board,
percussion) and Ben Reynolds (vocals, guitar), along with drumming recruit Alan
Cowart, have revived their signature American Primitive sound, and it looks
like the gigs are gradually being rolled out following an initial testing of
the waters in April. This weekend, on Saturday, June 25, the band will be
performing live at the annual AthFest bash in Athems (about 7:45 pm) and then
on July 1 they’ll be at Barley’s Taproom in Asheville, NC,
showtime at 9:30.

According to an article published this week in Athens’ Flagpole magazine, the genesis of the
reunion came when the band’s song “Chickenbone” was tapped for the 2011 film The Mechanic. “Brant and I kept in
touch,” explained Reynolds, “but we hadn’t been in close contact until a couple
of years ago when someone got in touch with us about music for an indie film. We
decided to re-record [the song] with John Keane. It was the first time we got
together like that in a long time. We decided to do a few shows to see how it
went, and it was a lot of fun.

“It’s fun to revisit this stuff with new ears and old ears.
If we can write some new songs and play them out, instead of just playing old
stuff, I think we’ll stick around for a while.”

Here’s hoping that’s the case.
