It happened last week, but hey, sometimes it takes us a
while to catch up on our newspapers… Plus, it’s always a good day when we have
an excuse to post an item about Patti Smith.

Smith is the recipient of this year’s Polar Music Prize, as
is Kronos Quartet. It’s the highest music award that Sweden
bestows, and both artists will receive it August 30 in Stockholm, directly from the King of Sweden
no less.

According to the Royal
Swedish Academy
of Music, Smith has spent her life “devoting [it] to art in all its
forms”. Patti Smith has demonstrated how much rock’n’roll there is in
poetry and how much poetry there is in rock’n’roll…. She has transformed the
way an entire generation looks, thinks and dreams.”

Last year’s winners were Ennio Morricone and Bjork.

No word yet on whether veteran Grammy spoiler Steve Stoute will be
protesting Smith’s being awarded the prize and claiming it should have been
Justin Bieber and Eminem.
