BLURT fave Maria
Taylor has announced she’ll be rleasing her fourth LP, Overlook, on August 16th,
via longtime label Saddle Creek. New single “In A Bad Way” can
currently be streamed and shared via www.MariaTaylorMusic.com and Saddle Creek’s website – or below.

The details: Recorded in Taylor’s hometown of Birmingham, AL,
Overlook is a lush,
nine-song collection that ranges in sound from alluringly bold and immediate,
to softer contemplation. Opener “Masterplan” is a taut, simmering
introduction, full of thundering drums, jangly guitar, and soaring keys. The
sultry, modern ’60s pop strut of “Matador” is unlike anything she’s
written before and “In A Bad Way” shares a similarly seductive, but
looser, groove. The old-time shuffle of “Bad Idea?” recollects a 1920s
speakeasy, while the sunny guitars of “This Could Take A Lifetime”
belie the dark and longing ache found within the song’s bedrock. Taylor’s warm, resolute yet vulnerable, and
graceful voice illuminates each and every song.

Taylor
was at first struck with an unusual bout of writer’s block following her move
home from Los Angeles, CA, early last year. During a December break
in touring around the reunited Azure Ray’s fourth album Drawing Down The
Moon
, she finally wrote the haunting “Happenstance” and spent the
next two weeks writing and demo-ing the entire album in her bedroom. Taylor chose to self-produce for the first
time, having a distinct, raw sound in mind for the album and wanting to capture
the sound of Alabama and its music scene. She recruited a host of local
musicians for the recordings and these invaluable contributors include:
neighbor Lester Nuby III (Verbena, Vulture Whale) engineered the album and
plays drums on two tracks (Taylor
herself played the remaining drum parts); friend Browan Lollar (of Jason Isbell
& the 400 Unit; lead guitar, acoustic guitar, lap steel); brother Macey
Taylor (of The Mystic Valley Band, A.A. Bondy; bass, banjo, organ, keys).
Sister Kate Taylor also lent her skills and voice to a couple of songs and dad
Macey Taylor, Sr. played mandolin and sang on “Bad Idea?”. LA-based
but Birmingham-native Daniel Farris mixed the album, and her friend, local
artist Margarette Simmons, designed Overlook’s artwork.

Taylor is
currently on a five and a half week tour in support of Jason Isbell and the 400
Unit. The tour will take her throughout the US
and into Canada before
wrapping up June 20th at The Casbah in San Diego, CA
– dates listed below.
