Listen: Black Keys Cover Buddy Holly

From forthcoming Holly
tribute album.

Yeah, yeah, we know… tribute albums sucked in the past and
they will stick suck in the future. That’s why we basically shrugged at the
news of the forthcoming Buddy Holly Tribute album Rave On Buddy Holly, which drops June 28 on Fantasy/Concord – hasn’t
this already been done, like, 3 or 4 times already? (Hey, while we’re at it,
why not assemble, say, a Hendrix trib, or Rolling Stones, or Bob Dylan. That
would be novel!)

At any rate, a tribute is only as interesting as the
performers – or, more accurately, how the performers remake/remodel the source
material. And here, the roster of artists does seem promising: Paul McCartney, She &
Him, Kid Rock, Patti Smith, Nick Lowe, justin Townes Earle, John Doe, Lou Reed,
the Detroit Cobras, Florence and the Machine, Modest Mouse, My Morning Jacket,
Julian Casablancas, Fiona Apple – and, in the requisite trib album syndrome “WTF
entry”, Cee-Lo.

the Black Keys – and they’ve released a teaser track from the Akron duo by way of “Dearest.” Check it out right here, and draw your own conclusions because, hell, what do WE know?
