Listen: Preview of New Dengue Fever

Exotic world-beat
rockers return in April.

By Blurt Staff

Cambodian/American rockers (with a touch of Afrobeat and
psychedelic surf) Dengue Fever, profiled by BLURT back in 2009, will release
thierstudio album since 2008’s Venus on
Earth
on April 19. Titled Cannibal
Courtship
(Fantasy), it’s described as “deftly balancing the wide-ranging
influences that inform their sound and songs” and features, as always, Cambodian-born
vocalist Chhom Nimol, who’s pictured on the CD cover, above. Her signature
hypnotic vibrato remains a core component of the band’s sound, which they say
is increasingly veering into eclectic areas.

“Before it was partly Cambodian and partly indie rock,”
explains bassist Senon Gaius Williams of the band’s evolution. “Now it’s 100
percent both.”

Stream of album track: “Cement Slippers”

Brothers Ethan (keyboards) and Zac (guitar) Holtzman started
Dengue Fever in 2001.  Once they added
the saxophonist David Ralicke, drummer Paul Smith and bassist Williams, they
went looking for a Cambodian singer.  Enter
Nimol, who performed regularly for the King and Queen of Cambodia. Since
their inception, the band’s unique take on 60s Cambodian pop and American surf
rock has garnered praise and attention from fans (Ray Davies from the Kinks
called them “a cross between Led Zeppelin and Blondie”) and critics alike.
