Seminal hip-hop artist
struck by medical emergency but has no health insurance.

Music got a jolt the other day when DJ Premier put the word
out via his Twitter feed that pioneering hip-hop DJ Kool Herc was in the hospital
needing surgery – and that, with Herc lacking health insurance, a fund was
being created to help offset the inevitable medical bills:

Just spoke to Kool Herc. he’s ok and in good spirits.. needs
surgery.THIS TUESDAY at SUTRA.we gonna do a collection for him.

Sunday afternoon Premier tweeted the address where donations
could be sent, along with additional info:

For all donations for Kool Herc….send to: Kool Herc Production PO Box 20472 Huntington
Station, NY 11746

There will also be a new Paypal & additional setup & for
overseas to help Kool Herc out…I will send ASAP…we gonna help him get well

Kool Herc’s Sister Cindy Campbell is dealing with the issues and you
may email her at:

Then late yesterday he added this
encouraging update:

Just passing it on…..Herc Is out of the hospital….he’s home…

Premier subsequently floated the
idea of establishing an ongoing fund that would be available for hip-hop artists
to tap if they found themselves in similar situations:

Maybe every year a concert can be done to set aside money for the older
artists that paved the way to use the money for health care n shit

Amen. To that we’ll add – there already
is an organization, Sweet Relief, well known for its work over the years
assisting musicians needing financial assistance stemming from “illness,
disability, or age-related problems.” (Among the high profilers Sweet Relief
helped early on were Victoria Williams and Vic Chesnutt.) Typically, those
artists have come from the rock, folk and Americana
communities, although obviously a financially-devastating medical crisis can
affect anyone from any genre. Time to bring all these threads together, methinks.
