Pop provocateur Amanda
Palmer – who we profiled back in November of 2008, and was also the subject of
a recent Blurt look at the new music patronage – drops a new album, Amanda Palmer Goes Down Under, on Jan.
21 via Liberator. It’s billed as “a collection of
live and studio tracks with an Antipodean theme… The album berates a lover for
his love of vegemite and celebrates a lady’s nether regions with the new single
“Map of Tasmania.”  All material for this
album was written and recorded in Australia
and New Zealand.
It includes some special tributes in the form of covers of Nick Cave
and New Zealand’s
Peter Jefferies.

The
accompanying video for “Map of Tasmania” was produced and directed by Michael
Pope and you can check it out below. It’s pretty crazy. Explained Pope, in a
statement, “At one point – ten hours into our shooting day, racing to complete
the video – I looked around the room. There were crew members hustling, break
dancers and krunkers practicing,  40 dance party extras, twenty people –
women and men both – dressed in various merkins each one more outrageous than
the one before, a project self-funded by Amanda and as outside the box as one
can get, and I thought to myself “this is the ritual of our time”-
The Creative Action.”

Meanwhile,
Palmer is holding a remix contest for the “Tasmania” single.  Head over to her page at Indaba Music for
details – she’s willing to pay the winner $1,000. The winner and two
runner ups could also be featured on a digital EP of remixes due out later this
year. Amanda and the Young Punx are personally judging the contest.  For
those in the twitterverse, use the hash tag #afpremix.
