album arriving early next year.

Spin.com is reporting that, according to R.E.M. bassist Mike
Mills, their forthcoming early-2011 album Collapse
Into Now will feature special guests Eddie Vedder, Patti Smith, Lenny Kaye
and Peaches. Produced by Jacknife Lee, the album’s songs, a mix of “slow
beautiful songs” and “rockers,” include “Blue” (with Smith), “It Happened Today”
(Vedder) and a still-untitled number (Peaches, plus guitarist Kaye).
Let’s be honest: in rock ‘n’ roll, which is not hip-hop,
having a slew of guests is often a sign of a band having jumped the shark. Here’s
hoping that’s not the case. Anyhow, the album was recorded over the course of
the past year in Berlin, Nashville
and New Orleans.
“With [previous album] Accelerate we were trying
to make a point by making the songs as short and as fast as possible,” Mills
is quoted as sayin. “So we wanted this new one to be more expansive. We
wanted to put more variety into it and not limit ourselves to any one type of
song. There are some really slow, beautiful songs; there are some nice,
mid-tempo ones; and then there are three or four rockers.”
