Grohl/Novoselic, Love GH5 War Heats Up

Love rants on Twitter
until she finally passes out. Meanwhile, two former Nirvana members express
disappointment in Guitar Hero 5.

In the aftermath of yesterday’s verbal tussle between
Nirvana’s Dave Grohl & Krist Novoselic and Kurt Cobain’s widow Courtney
Love – video game maker Activision had to step in after Love wigged out over
Guitar Hero 5 and make a statement indicating that Love had formally granted
the use of Cobain’s likeness for the game, and Grohl & Novoselic confirmed
that they “have no say whatsoever” in the usage of his likeness – La Love took
to the Twitter airwaves
in earnest, firing blustering, 140-character volley
after volley that numbered into the hundreds until she finally settled down
(presumably to catch some shut-eye after tweeting for nearly 24 hours straight)
around midnight EST.

Among Love’s bon
tweets
semi-relevant to the Activision thing (you have to wade through a
ton of crap to ferret this stuff out, as there are multiple tweets about
mortgage fraud, the Madoff case, conspiracy theories regarding people trying to
get her money, and more):

now any smart musician knows you never EVER sell publishing whatsoever,
but weitman who oozes so much charm for such a tiny fella

convinced me to do so, Activision has made thier press release, we
shall make ours and we shall seek acyive damages against these fuckers

in fact i have atumbl account since your all tooo lazy to go to
usserach or people finders if i have the energy i will twitpic this and take

it to tumblr, cos the bottom line @betsybreakdown is that the two
fuckers kurt dumoed are raping him and the lawyers are raping him

and they dont give a fuck about frances or wendy or kim infact kims
house was repossessed out of spite in 05 where the fuck was your outrage

And, uh, this one, that we can’t quite figure out:

dont allow the roadrunner records site to interpret our tweets as
itsthe most sexist dump on the net, im the daily#cunt everyd

Anyhow, Grohl and Novoselic
finally issued their own official statement yesterday (not via Twitter,
incidentally, and not in subliterate 140-character meth bursts). Wisely, they
did not address Love’s rantings; rather, they expressed their disappointment
and frustration over the way the Guitar Hero 5 game portrayed their late
bandmate
(the Cobain character can be unlocked so he plays songs not his, such as Bon Jovi’s. While the notion of the duo finding potential common ground with Courtney
Love is faintly ludicrous (she did, after all, suggest Grohl should be ass
raped), at least they come out and make their statements and then move on. It’s
not like they can do anything about the GH5 situation anyway.

That statement:

This is a statement
regarding Nirvana, Guitar Hero and the likeness of the late Kurt Cobain.

We want
people to know that we are dismayed and very disappointed in the way a
facsimile of Kurt is used in the Guitar Hero game.  The name and likeness
of Kurt Cobain are the sole property of his estate – we have no control
whatsoever in that area.

While we were aware of Kurt’s image being used with two Nirvana songs, we
didn’t know players have the ability to unlock
the character. This feature allows the character to be used with any kind of
song the player wants.   We urge Activision to do the right thing in
“re-locking” Kurt’s character so that this won’t continue in the
future.

It’s hard to watch an image of Kurt pantomiming other artists’ music alongside
cartoon characters.  Kurt Cobain wrote songs that hold a lot of meaning to
people all over the world.  We feel he deserves better.
