Anyone who has ever witnessed Paul Thorn in performance can attest to the fact that aside from his obvious musical skills, he’s also an adept master of ceremonies and a man whose ability to command attention and offer anecdotes likens him to a perfect preacher full of fire and frenzy. Well, at least that’s the image he puts across. A true southern troubadour, he blends humor, humility, and happenstance in equal measure, a style likely inherited from a father who was once a minister as well as a bunch of rambunctious relatives who gave him ideal fodder for his stories. As a result, it’s somewhat surprising — and yet not so much so — to hear him take such a serious turn by devoting himself to pure gospel on Don’t Let the Devil Ride, his truly mesmerizing new album. Like a revival of sorts, the sentiments are real and the execution adroit, especially on such songs as “You’ve Got to Move,” “One More River,” “Jesus Gonna Make Up My Dyin’ Bed” and “He’ll Make a Way,” each of which are immersed in credence and conviction. If Thorn didn’t have such an exceptional reputation as a humorist and showman, one could be convinced that bible beating could become his full time credo and calling
