Our
favorite adult-contemporary blues-woman returns after a seven year hiatus with
a record on her own label.   While 2005’s
under-rated Souls Alike featured
downhome soul and a sharp, complex songs, here our red-headed heroine mostly
returns to the quality soft-rock she perfected in her early solo career, but
juices it up with hot guitar solos on almost every song, often featuring her
own searing, dirty slide but also Bill Frisell’s intricate work and Al
Anderson’s (ex-NRBQ) sad, sympathetic picking.

Song-wise,
she serves up quality boomer love songs, especially the not-so-star-struck
“Marriage Made In Hollywood,” a reggae take on Gerry Rafferty’s
“Right Down the Line” and two fine later-day Dylan remakes.  She really shines when she hits her rootsy
stride on the Stones-groove of “Down to You,” the John Lee Hooker
boogie of “Ain’t Gonna Let You Go” and the New Orleans shuffle of “Split Decision.”  Classic-rock guys like Jagger and Clapton should only age so gracefully.
