As if trying to transmute a heavy, humid fog into sound, Jon Porras and Evan Caminiti use guitars and electronics to create an audio miasma that leaves a mist on your skin. V, which is indeed the duo’s fifth album, doesn’t expand on that concept much, but then, there’s no need. The caramel-thick atmosphere of “Blood Shadow” or the sweetly colored smoke of “The Long Shadow” either engross you or they don’t – no compromise here, even if there’s nothing too dissonant or unyielding. The pair keeps the door unlocked for the curious, but doesn’t put out tea and cakes in welcome, either.
