From West Virginia songstress’ new album, natch.
By Blurt Staff
She grew up in West Virginia and landed in Nashville where she honed her songwriting craft while working as a recording engineer—not a bad way to get her career underway at that. Her name is Haley Slagle, and nowadays she finds herself back in WVA, specifically Morgantown, and her new album is titled Liar’s Best Friend. We are honored to offer up a track premiere for the BLURT readership, “Whiskey.” Pour yourself a nice glass, and check it out:
Of the song, Slagle notes, “’Whiskey’ was written late one night while contemplating the end of a relationship and the coping skills I had embraced trying to get over it. I had been playing the song for several years when producer Jeremy Batten breathed new life into the track. He took a very personal song and gave it an arrangement that makes it seem approachable and universal.”
Amen to that. Operating on the college town’s scene since 2002, Slagle’s been in a number of bands and shared the stage with the likes of Jason Isbell, Lydia Loveless, Jenny Owen Youngs, Lucero and Dick Dale. More recently she put down her cache of original tunes with the help of Jeremy Batten, William Matheny, Bryan Smith and Michael Stewart, recording them in two sessions at Smith’s house. Liar’s Best Friend was the yield, and she’ll be performing throughout the fall (not to mention a special hometown show on July 31). More details and concert dates at her official website.
