Track Premiere: Rocco DeLuca Gets “Free”

Song culled from his upcoming Daniel Lanois-produced album… from the looks of the photo above, the songwriter was feeling pretty “free” when making the album…

Rocco DeLuca’s 2012 release Drugs ‘N Hymns set a mighty high bar for quality; BLURT called it “a near-masterwork of haunted epistles and luminous meditations that, powered by his high, keening voice and with his National Steel as ballast, achieves liftoff after liftoff.” We approved that message then, and we approve his new music now – so we are very stoked to offer up a track from his new album Rocco DeLuca (which drops Aug. 19 via the 429 label). Check out “Free”:

According to DeLucca, “‘Free’ is a list of all the obvious and subtle forces that confuse our minds and body. After many failures one can sometimes strengthen from experience and get back up.” The album itself was produced by the legendary Daniel Lanois, a longtime friend of whom in an earlier statement DeLuca noted, “When Daniel hears music he believes in, he simply calls it ‘soul music.’ He follows his heart and instincts. He’s such a raw human being and is very direct and truthful and he brings honor and dignity to all he does, whether he’s playing the pedal steel or mixing. He’s a master at recognizing the most important things in the mix and I trust him to find the most important sentiment, even when it’s the voice of the slide guitar which best tells the song’s story.”
