Track Premiere: Peter Case “On the Way Downtown”

Tune culled from upcoming archival live album, due in October.

By Blurt Staff

The man is Peter Case. The album is On the Way Downtown: Recorded Live On Folkscene, and the label is Omnivore Recordings, which is releasing the archival collection of previously unissued live performances (dating from 1998 and 2000) on October 27. It’s no secret we here at the BLURT braintrust are huge fans of Case, dating all the way back to his Nerves and Plimsouls days, so how about a sneak preview, fellow fans? Check out the title track from the album:

Of the tune, Case notes, “This song was always an ice breaker at the shows — seems like a lot of people relate to the story. I’ve been wandering downtown my whole life, looking for something or someone.”

We are advised that On the Way Downtown collects “material from two live radio performances on the highly influential KPFK-FM Los Angeles syndicated radio program in 1998 and 2000. The first half features material from his then, newly released Full Service, No Waiting — an album New York magazine called “stunning.” The Full Service No Waiting set is a live full band performance featuring some of Peter’s great musical friends. The latter half contains material from 2000’s Flying Saucer Blues, as well as songs from his earlier releases. Plus, some choice covers appear as well. Both intimate acoustic sets have remained unheard since their original broadcasts. The 2000 set features Peter with violinist extraordinaire David Perales.”

Below is the full tracklisting along with Case’s fall tour itinerary. Meanwhile, read the BLURT review of Case’s outstanding 2015 album HWY 62 as well as our appreciation of his 1986 solo debut, still a classic. (Photo credit: Greg Allen)
