Very special tune with a very special pedigree…
By Blurt Staff
We’ve gone on record as being fans of Austin Americana indie outfit the Painted Redstarts – the band’s video for “Curtains Wide” video (directed by Geoff Marslett) debuted right here at Blurt last summer. The group’s musical pedigree is noteworthy too: Alejandro Escovedo’s old True Believer’s band mate Jon Dee Graham’s son William Harries Graham handles guitars and vocals; he’s joined by bassist Sam Jackson and drummer James Caldwell. Speaking of musical pedigrees, we’ve got a sweet track to debut for the Blurt readership now as well—it’s called “She’s Got,” and some of you out there may recognize the title. Check it out, then read on:
Explains Graham, “Alejandro wrote this song when he was in the True Believers with my dad, Jon Dee Graham. The band does not normally do covers and unlike a lot of our more indie songs it’s a punk rock song. The song has become our own since we played we first played it at Alejandro’s annual ACL show last year. The song is so energetic and puts the band in such a Rock n’ Roll frenzy that I usually wind up flying off the stage with my guitar when we perform it live. The song was recorded by Mark Addison for our forthcoming record Foreign Fields and mixed by Dave McNair.”
The backstory: No less a source than Rolling Stone hailed the Painted Redstarts as the future of Austin music after their performance at ACL Live/Moody Theater last year at Alejandro Escovedo’s United Sounds of Austin. The band has become regulars at the world renowned iconic Continental Club The Austin Chronicle’s Kevin Curtin hails Graham as the “voice of his generation.” Rock critic Doug Freeman calls the band “ambassadors to the next generation that’s already making waves in river city.” The band was selected as 1 of 7 band’s featured by KUTX for SXSW last year for the series “Ones to Watch.” William was featured in last year’s Wired Magazine’s Annual “Smart List,” the top 50 innovative world changers, that includes Woon-Soon Park (Mayor of Seoul), Brandon Stanton (Humans of New York), Satoshi Nakamoto (founder of Bitcoin) Ben Rattray (founder of Change. org), and James Turrell. William founded the 501(c)3 nonprofit Music4Music that supports communities without music programs.
