Track Premiere: Game Theory Expanded “Lolita Nation” Bonus Cut

Game Theory

Now the rest of you can find out why those of us around in the ‘80s called ourselves card-carrying members of the Lolita Nation…. God bless you, Scott.

By Blurt Staff

How do we love thee, Game Theory? Let us count the ways: there was our “Nighttime of the Season” feature; a “Dead Center” review; the “A Blazing Beginning” feature;  and those are just the items of coverage from the past couple of years via the Omnivore label’s diligent archival digging into the band’s back catalog. R.I.P. Game Theory founder Scott Miller, who was one of power pop’s great savants: losing him in 2013 still hurts. So we are doubly proud to have a track to unveil for everyone here: it’s “One More for Saint Michael” (rough mix), a bonus track from the upcoming, expanded, edition of the group’s 1987 magnum opus Lolita Nation, due out Feb. 5 via Omnivore. Check it out:

The Mitch Easter-produced gem was an ambitious 2LP set, and now the original’s 27 tracks are joined by 21 bonus performances. In addition to the previously unheard eight-minute version of “Chardonnay” and alternate mixes of key album tracks, the bonus material features covers of David Bowie, The Modern Lovers, Sex Pistols, Elvis Costello, The Smiths, The Stooges, Joy Division, The Hollies, and Public Image Ltd. Classics and a never before heard song by Scott Miller from the Lolita Nation era.

The deluxe reissue’s vinyl edition double LP has its first pressing on translucent dark green vinyl, with black to follow. The LP contains a download card for the entire 48-track CD program. Included in the book are new liner notes from Okkervil River’s Will Sheff, interviews with the band and original album contributors and previously unseen photos. Worth noting: the story of Scott Miller and Game Theory is chronicled in Brett Milano’s recently published book, Don’t All Thank Me at Once: The Lost Pop Genius of Scott Miller, and there is to be a SXSW 2016 panel titled “No One’s Twisting His Arm: Game Theory’s Scott Miller,” composed of reissue producer Dan Vallor, band member Gil Ray, Omnivore’s Cheryl Pawelski and author Brett Milano.
