R.E.M. Tells Trump – and ALL campaigns – to “Go Fuck Yourselves”

REM crop

And for good reason, too…

If you were perplexed, as I was, about a series of semi-cryptic tweets from R.E.M.’s Mike Mills late yesterday afternoon, never fear: things got cleared up pretty swiftly following an official statement from R.E.M. regarding current politicians’ repeated, but unauthorized, use of the band’s songs for their campaigns. Recall that Donald Trump had used “It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)” during the Washington rally against Obama and the Iran nukes deal. To wit:

“While we do not authorize or condone the use of our music at this political event, and do ask that these candidates cease and desist from doing so, let us remember that there are things of greater importance at stake here,”  wrote the group on their Facebook page. “The media and the American voter should focus on the bigger picture, and not allow grandstanding politicians to distract us from the pressing issues of the day and of the current Presidential campaign.”

This was a somewhat more, er, judicious statement than the one that Michael Stipe had issued a short while before via Mills’ Twitter account:

“Go fuck yourselves, the lot of you — you sad, attention-grabbing, power-hungry little men. Do not use our music or my voice for your moronic charade of a campaign.”

Personally, those of us here at the Blurt bunker watching it all unfold prefer the earlier comment, but that’s just us…Trump had previously incurred the wrath of Neil Young for his use of “Rockin’ In the Free World,” while also yesterday ’80s hard rockers Survivor got on prez candidate Mike Huckabee for his unauthorized playing of their classic “Eye of the Tiger” at a rally,

Mills also had his own, pithy statement via Twitter: “Personally, I think the Orange Clown will do anything for attention. I hate giving it to him.”

No kidding. As do we… but news is news! No comment from Trump yet…
