Pussy Riot, notably erstwhile Russian political prisoners Maria Alyokhina and Nadya Tolokonnikova, yesterday released a new song and the band’s first in English. Titled “I Can’t Breathe” as you no doubt have already heard, it’s about Eric Garner. The striking video, which features the voice of Richard Hell reciting Garner’s dying words, is below.

In a statement the band commented, “This song is for Eric and for all those from Russia to America and around the globe who suffer from state terror — killed, choked, perished because of war and state sponsored violence of all kinds.”

Meanwhile, the band was part of today’s “Weekend Edition” at NPR, whose Scott Simon talked Tolokonnikova about the song. You can listen to the fascinating conversation after 12pm EST HERE.
