All the young girls ‘n’ dudes…

It’s become an annual celebration, apparently: that would be Michael Stipe serving as the quasi-opening act for Patti Smith in New York for a solo set, just as he did in 2014. As Pitchfork is reporting, Stipe appeared onstage at the Beacon Theatre last night to do Neil Young’s “Old Man”, the Doors’ “People Are Strange”, Boy George’s “The Crying Game”, John Lennon’s “Imagine”, and David Bowie/Mott the Hoople’s “All the Young Dudes,” additionally dancing with Smith during her own set during “People Have the Power”. Pitchfork has several short, rather shakey, Instagram-derived clips of some of the songs.
